Why Debate?

Debate is a time-honored tradition in the United States. It is the process by which we, as a society, come to grips with the important issues of the day. It is how we learn to think critically and to see both sides of an issue. It is how we learn to communicate effectively.

And yet, debate is often seen as a frivolous activity, something that is only for the "smart kids" or the "nerds." This could not be further from the truth. Debate is for everyone.

Most people think of speech and debate as an activity for the elite—something that only the smartest students do. But the truth is that this is an activity that anybody can do. And it has some great benefits, too.

Competitive speech and debate, specifically NSDA Congressional debate, is an excellent way for students to learn the skills that they will need in order to be successful in college and in their careers.

Students of all grade levels have the opportunity to engage in competitive speech and debate. These activities help students learn to research and think critically about current issues. In addition, they improve public speaking skills. These skills are valuable in many different settings, such as job interviews, presentations, and networking events.

NSDA Congressional debate is a unique form of debate that simulates the congressional legislative process. It is an activity that is both challenging and fun. Starting early, in middle school, is the best way for students to get the most out of their debate experience.

By starting early, students will have the opportunity to learn the skills that they need in order to be successful. They will also be able to compete at the highest levels and to earn scholarships to help pay for college.

So if you are looking for a way to challenge yourself and to have a lot of fun, consider joining Youth Voices today and discover the wonderful world of debate.
